How long does it take to obtain a copy of a vital record?

The answer depends on how the order was placed and what type of birth certificate was requested. We offer mail-in, in-person, telephone, and online orders via VitalChek. The standard traditional mail-in processing time takes the longest, but orders placed online only take 1-2 weeks, and we offer same day service for walk-in customers. Note regarding checks being cashed: checks are cashed/fees are deposited immediately upon receipt of the application by the DHSS accounting (fee receipts) office. The application is then sent to the Bureau of Vital Records for processing. Therefore, a cashed check does not indicate an application has been processed/completed, but the good news is that it does indicate the Department of Health & Senior Services has received your application!
