Is it safe to attend fairs where pigs are present?

Yes. All the people infected with H3N2v have reported direct or indirect exposure to swine and were not simply attending a county or state fair. When visiting an animal exhibit, petting zoo, etc., it is always prudent to practice good hygiene. For example, wash your hands frequently with soap and running water before and after exposure to animals. Also, don’t eat or drink in the animal area and avoid any animal that appears to be sick (coughing or sneezing). These simple practices protect against the flu and many other common illnesses.
